So, I had graduation commencement tonight. The keynote speaker was a British Historian. He, as well as the President, talked about Winston Churchill. He was quite the character. I just wanted to share a couple of his quotes.
"Any 20 year-old who isn't a liberal doesn't have a heart, and any 40 year-old who isn't a conservative doesn't have a brain."
-Winston Churchill
"Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing ever happened."
Sir Winston Churchill |

My favorite Churchill quote is:
"Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." |

I believe in socialism on a small scale. I would never subject the idea onto an entire population, but small communities of socialists living together and helping one another within the larger capitalist society is my ideal way of living. Aren't families usually socialists within themselves?
As long as everyone has the desire to prosper within the capitalism, socialists can live collectively and prosper beyond what they would alone.
I don't think socialism or communism could work upon an entire population simply because there will always be people who don't want to contribute. Even at the small scale, there would have to be some consequence for not participating in the contribution. In other words, if I were to live in a small community of my close friends and family and we all contributed to one another's well-being, if someone just decided not to contribute, then it would really mess things up. I don't know. Its just a utopian dream, really. |

Is that so bad? Utopia used to be something we could acheive, now it's become synonymous with impossible. |

In theory, Socialism works, but when put to use, it quickly becomes corrupt, as does every other organization run by man. My belief is that American Socialism should be confined to things like military, police force, and the like. Everything else should be privately owned, as corruption is easier to weed out on a smaller scale. |

"I do not admit...that a great wrong has been done to the Red Indians of America, or the black people of Australia...by the fact that a stronger race, a higher grade race...has come in and taken its place" - Churchill to Palestine Royal Commission, 1937.
"I do not understand the squeamishness about the use of gas. I am strongly in favour of using poisonous gas against uncivilised tribes" - Churchill Writing as president of the Air Council.
"The unnatural and increasingly rapid growth of the feeble minded and insane classes, coupled as it is with a steady restriction among all the thrifty, energetic and superior stocks, constitutes a national and race danger which it is impossible to exaggerate...I feel that the source from which the stream of madness is fed should be cut off and sealed up before another year has passed" - Churchill to Asquith, 1910.
"One may dislike Hitler's system and yet admire his patriotic achievements. If our country were defeated, I hope we should find a champion as admirable to restore our courage and lead us back to our place among the nations" - Churchill From 'Great Contemporaries', 1937.

That's because it is, for the time being. |

Isn't that the saddest thing? That we don't think we can reach that high? |
