New nuclear warhead design for US
By Jamie Coomarasamy
BBC News, Washington
The Bush administration has selected the design for America's first new nuclear warhead in nearly two decades.
US officials say the warhead will not add to the country's nuclear arsenal, but will replace existing missiles.
Critics, though, argue this sends the wrong signal at a time when the White House is leading efforts to curb Iran and North Korea's nuclear ambitions.
The chosen design was developed in a Californian laboratory and is based on a warhead already tested in the 1980s.
That will satisfy the US Congress, which signed off on the idea of a new warhead on the basis that there would not be any fresh missile tests.
Senior US officials, meanwhile, are stressing that this is not the start of a new arms race.
They say the warheads will simply replace older, less reliable ones with a safer version that is due to be operational in five years' time.
But, at a moment when the White House is trying to stop North Korea and Iran from developing their nuclear programmes, some see the decision to press ahead with a new US warhead as sending an unfortunate mixed message.

| well russia is doing the same thing and since bush decided to start a new arms race by pulling out of proliferation treaties to build our sweet missile defense system that works so well that i am no longer afraid of being nuked with an intercontinental ballistic nuclear missile, i guess that we must follow suit. plus it just lets everyone else know (especially iran) that the u.s.a. is the best and we can do whatever the fuck we want but no one else can. |

Russia is in no position to engage in a new arms race. that race has already been won by a guy named Reagan. |

russia is in a much better position than the u.s. they are not spending trillions on bullshit wars and they, like every other oil rich nation, are making so much money right now. i mean they are paying off loans from when the soviet union went bankrupt early. the u.s. can't even make the minimum payments on our loans with out passing emergency legislation to allow our debt caps to be extended (as happened in the spring of 2006). russia announced they built a new super nuke that will penetrate any satellite based missile defense system and they announced that they are replacing their stock of nuclear missiles with new ones. they also are threatening to pull out of treaties that ban the development of new mid-range ballistic missiles. sounds like an arms race to me. |

| No to mention that the U.S. won't be in a race with just Russia, but all of the non-western world as well. |

Yup, and it's purely a result of amaerica refusing to continue with proliferation. |

| It really seems a waste of tax payer's money to go developing new warheads. If you wait long enough the North Koreans and the Iranians will send you some brand new ones, by airmail! |

If you believe that I have a war in Iraq to sell you.
Seriously though Mother Russia has just gotten completely out of debt(while we have 2 trillion)
They still have nukes
and along with their good buddies communist China
will block any attempt to accomplish any good in
Africa, Asia, or the Middle East. |

so first thing that i notice is that you seem to be eluding to having an opinion that war with iran is good as well as war in iraq, and russia and china fucked that up.
in asia, it is the chinese who benefit most from a non-nuclear north korea. they were instrumental in achieving the agreement to have the north dismantle their nuclear program.
china at this point is more reliant on and is in cahoots with the u.s way more than russia. they need the u.s. to consume all that shit that is making them the homogeneous industrial superpower. in the future, when china's energy needs maximize and when more regions achieve the demand for more manufactured goods due to rapid development attributed to free trade, china will abandon the u.s. |

Now I know sarcasm hard to read but obviously my first line should have told you that I thought the Iraq war was a joke. Secondly I have been preaching on this site for some time now the a war with Iran would be futile and counter productive. As to Russia and China. Well Vladmir Putin is no nice guy and neither is Mahmoud and most of Iran's backing is from Russia and since many eastern European countries get their fuel from Russia or Iran it will never happen. China who I vehemently hate I would actually like to see blown into the oblivion. Their horrible track record with human rights violations should speak for itself. The fact that their workers live and work in abhorrent conditions is disgusting, especially in the fact they call themselves a communist country, when it's really run by coal barons and sweatshop owners. They really couldn't care less about Kim Jon Il their major problem with him is that he attracts attention to their part of the world. China is still a plague around the world with its torture and murder in Tibet to it's stopping of the U.N. to get involved with Taiwan. Not only is it's reach over in Asia but over to Africa were it gets a major amount of fuel. They pay the murders and gang leaders cheap for the fuel in Darfur and other places in chaos among Africa in return for protection from the U.N. and others who would with to save those countries from the bloody massacre that is happening. Finally their role in destroying our ozone is second to none other than the U.S. and it looks like it might surpass us. Finally we are having the 2008 Olympic games in that shithole.
You tell me honestly that you can condone China and it's actions my friend. |

i kind of figured the sarcasm but my initial impression had to be questioned.
i do not condone the actions of china in any way. the only thing i credit them with is not having a hunger problem since i believe the mid to late 50s, and for attempting deal with the problem of human population growth. china is fucked up and it is disgusting what goes on there and what my country under the direction of clinton is enabling them to do.
north korea is next. this deal to end their nuclear program is serving to hand u.s. corporations a new slave labor force. |
