I dont know to either be sad that a comedian has gained the trust of more people than Dan Rather or laugh that a comedian is that high up on the scale than actual journalists.

I think it's because of the non-serious nature of what he does.
If a real journalist says that someone's an idiot and his ideas are stupid, he'll be called "biased" and "unprofessional", even if the accusations of incompetance are totally accurate.
If anyone criticizes jon stewart for that, his response is clear and inarguable - "this isn't news. we don't have sources or facts. it's all just for the laughs".
In that sense, a comedian is more free to tell the truth than a journalist.
