| this is a great law, because we all know that if a girl is getting pregnant under the age of 16, she must have been raped, and if not she is going to be a bad person and we need her DNA on file to bust her for her future crimes. |

This is so backwards. These girls are being treated like criminals when they actually would be doing the responsible thing by going to the doctor. All this is going to do is force more girls to have do-it-yourself abortions, give birth and leave their babies in dumpsters or carry their babies to term with no medical care.

Pretty much.
But it's florida - what else would anyone expect? |

I think you guys and gals are missing perhaps the most important point here: private citizens are being made into agents of the State.
How far is this from requiring people to turn in their neighbors for 'suspicious activities'? In principle, there is no difference whatsoever.
Implacable and inexorable, the police state advances day by day. |

There is no clear-cut division between private persons and the state. We are all part of civilization, and as such, we have responsibilities in it.
The pregnant teenagers thing isn't bad because it requires healthcare workers to notify the state about something - it's bad because it requires healthcare workers to notify the state about something stupid and irrelevent. |

A police state, as I was informed, is not defined by requiring citizens to report on each other, but rather by finding out everything without this. |

I live in Florida and I think this law is ridiculous.
Wouldn't this be kinda violating the 9th amendment anyway? I mean, if abortion is protected under privacy, why can't pregnancy be? I can't remember which case it was, but it had to do with a a state law that required the woman to tell her spouse, so it went to the Supreme Court and the Supreme Court said that the law was unconstitutional because what if the baby wasn't the spouses baby? It would bring domestic turmoil.
I think the same applies to this, if a girl gets pregnant, that's going to be some major domestic turmoil, especially for hardcore conservative parents. |
