I had some time so I thot I would run this test. Of the ten states with the lowest unemployment rate, how many have GOP governors.
http://www.bls.gov/web/laumstrk.htm
results were pretty uninformative. I have never been a big fan of these kind of things. The real truth is in the policies of each state. Which states are low tax, low regulation, business friendly states. That will require more research but here are the results.
Dem
Oklahoma
New Mexico
New Hamp
Iowa
Wyoming
GOP
Louisiana
Utah
South Dakota
North Dakota
Nebraska |

This chart shows the comparative tax burden of each state.
http://www.retirementliving.co.....n_2008.pdf
Here are the top states for unemployment. The number after each state is their rank in the above chart for their tax burden (1 being the worst; 50 the best)
1 WYOMING 48th
2 NEBRASKA 17th
3 NORTH DAKOTA 33rd
4 SOUTH DAKOTA 45th
5 IOWA 31st
6 UTAH 22nd
7 NEW HAMPSHIRE 46th
8 NEW MEXICO 44th
9 OKLAHOMA 19rd
10 LOUISIANA 42nd
I think this shows a definite trend towards low tax states being better off than high tax states. agreed? |

Here is the same data only this time I compared the tax burden of the worst states for unemployment. (1st is the lowest tax burden; 50th the highest)
41 Florida 47th
41 INDIANA 28th
41 OHIO 7th
45 NEVADA 49th
46 CALIFORNIA 6th
46 RHODE ISLAND 10th
48 NORTH CAROLINA 20th
49 OREGON 26th
50 SOUTH CAROLINA 37th
51 MICHIGAN 27th
more evidence that high tax states are not doing well for unemployment. |

so the statistical average are these:
The states with the highest unemployment rate had an average ranking in the tax burden comparison of 25.7.
The states with the lowest unemployment rate had an average ranking in the tax burden comparison of 34.7.
Is this evidence that low tax states have better economies than high tax states? If you're a lib, none of this will matter. |
